Engineering Digital Signage
Digital Signage Service
Virginia Tech Engineering uses Xibo, an open-source digital signage software solution, for displaying media content on TVs, computer monitors, or virtual displays throughout the college, targeting audiences of Students, Visitors, or Faculty and Staff. If you or your department would like to start using Xibo to create signage, please refer to this page to learn the necessary prerequisites for onboarding and use.
Who can use the Digital Signage Service?
Any Engineering department is free to request access to use Xibo. Your department level IT professional will be set up as an Organization Admin user. There are several other roles within Xibo with lesser permissions that the Org. Admin can assign within your department as needed.
Required Equipment
Xibo is very simple and easy to run! To create a display to broadcast content, all you need is a sign, which can be a TV or a computer monitor set up where your target audience can see it, a computer attached to the display to run the content, and a separate computer to log into the Xibo CMS and manage your content.
Account Organization/Setup
Before you can gain access to the Xibo signage system, you will have to contact your department's IT personnel. They should email coemis@vt.edu to request account setup.
Please check back here or contact IT if you need assistance, or have a request for help or tutorials on a subject not yet covered.
Start to Finish Xibo Setup
Xibo is a good way to show media and information on display devices throughout the College of Engineering, but it is a fairly involved process from start to finish. We have created tutorials for each step of the process of getting a display up and running; you will need to follow each tutorial in order to be able to get to the end state of displaying content. This order of operations list will walk you through the order in which you should follow our tutorial steps and guides:
