How to Create a Channel in Microsoft Teams
Create a Standard Channel
- For Standard channel creation: Click the 3 dots icon beside your Team name.→ Select “Add channel” from the pop-up menu.
- Enter a name for your channel.
- Under “Privacy,” select “Standard – Everyone on the team has access.”→ Click “Add.”
Create a Private Channel
- For Private channel creation: Begin by following the same steps that you would to create a Standard channel:
- Click the 3 dots icon beside your Team name.→ Select “Add channel” from the pop-up menu.→ Enter a name for your channel.
- Under “Privacy,” select “Private – Specific teammates (members on the team) have access.”→ Click “Create.”
Create a Shared Channel
- For Shared channel creation: Begin by following the same steps that you would to create a Standard channel:
- Click the 3 dots icon beside your Team name.→ Select “Add channel” from the pop-up menu.→ Enter a name for your channel.
- Under “Privacy,” select “Shared – People you choose from your org or other orgs have access." (This is somewhat misleading: Virginia Tech only allows sharing within the University, so in this case a Shared channel can include members who are not otherwise associated with your team, but who are still within the Virginia Tech organization.)→ Click “Create.”
Additional Notes
- Manage your Teams, share a Team with others, and add people to your Team from the search menu.
- Any Team or channel you create has a limit of 300,000 total files. The OneDrive computer app will very likely crash if this limit is exceeded.
